To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong International Airport, the Hong Kong Airport Authority- Hong Kong International Airport- Hong Kong International Airport Citythe airport hosted a series of performances by airport staff and renowned local artists in the terminal on July 6, 2023 is the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong International Airport. The chairman, board members and chief executive officer of the Hong Kong Airport Authority, together with the airport industry, passengers and the public, unveiled the celebration at the arrival hall of Terminal 1.

The festivities kicked off with a drumming performance followed by a jazz band and dance performances by airport staff from the AA, local airlines and other organisations. Youth Orchestra and local pop singers also participated in the festivities.

Let Hong Kong take off again! As an important international aviation hub of Hong Kong, about 120 airlines operate at Hong Kong International Airport, connecting more than 220 departure points around the world, making it one of the busiest airports in the world. In the future, Hong Kong International Airport will continue to protect the travel experience of every passenger with enthusiasm and create more wonderful travel stories for passengers.

The Hong Kong Airport Authority held the 25th Anniversary Celebration Reception of Hong Kong International Airport on the evening of July 10, and received about 1,000 guests from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the airport industry and different sectors.

In his speech at the reception, Chief Executive Lee Kar-chiu said that the Hong Kong International Airport has been rated as one of the best and busiest airports in the world for many times, and keeps pace with the times, and continues to develop into a gateway leading Hong Kong to fly around the world.

AA Chairman So Ze-kwong said that in the past 25 years, Hong Kong International Airport has continued to improve, with passenger traffic increasing from 28 million in 1998 to 75 million. For many years, we have also firmly occupied the number one cargo airport in the world. At the same time, various projects under the vision of “Airport City” are also progressing satisfactorily, and the airport will become a prominent landmark in the Greater Bay Area integrating aviation, tourism, trade, retail and entertainment.

This Moring on the 3rd January 2023, 國泰航空 Cathay Pacific CX946 flight arriving at Xianyang International Airport, the only non-stop passenger route to and from Hong Kong in Northwest China, Cathay Pacific’s Xi’an-Hong Kong route officially resumed. The two-way passenger service between Xi’an and Hong Kong will operate twice on January 3 and January 10, and will gradually increase to one every two weeks starting from February 2023, both of which will operate on Tuesdays.

On in between 11th to 12th February 2022 HKIA Hong Kong International Airport preparations works for a now three runway system in which previously now Parking Standing Numbers have prefixes indicating their locations … Some Current Prefixes will be used as Taxiway designators for the new Three- Runway System.. Parking Stands were closed in Phases in for re-designation while maintaining normal airport operations ….

This morning, we closed the original North Runway for the final re-designation procedures, which included updating the runway designation markings, and the mandatory 07L and 25R instruction markings on the runway and taxiways, which are now 07C and 25C respectively. We have also refreshed movement area guidance signs on the airfield, as well as relevant equipment and procedures for our air traffic control and airport operations control systems.

The Third Runway, which will be in operation in 2022, will be designated as the new North Runway (07L/25R).

The works of expanding Hong Kong International Airport into a three runway system are ongoing As the Third Runway will be commission in 2022, the North Runway needs to be re-designated as the Centre Runway as 07L/25R to 07C/25C ….. Before re-designation Manuals and documents updates, also systems testing with New Signage Preparation ….

On the 1st December 2021, on 2345 Hong Kong SAR- Beijing time Briefing before re-designation works, on 2nd December 2021 0000 Hong Kong SAR-Beijing time the North Runway Closes for the replacements moment area guidance signs with new runway markings in with inspection by relevant parties among that with updating various systems … On the Same day 2nd December 2021 0635 morning Hong Kong SAR- Beijing time… it was the final runway inspection …. The Centre runway in operation the first aircraft lands, following the first commercial flight lands at the same day at 1009 Hong Kong SAR- Beijing time, The Runway re-designation signifies a milestones in the Three runway systems project

On September 7, 2021, the Hong Kong Airport Authority held the completion ceremony of the third runway paving project, marking an important milestone in the three-runway system project of Hong Kong International Airport.
The other major three-runway system facilities of the project include the expansion of the second passenger terminal, the construction of the T2 passenger corridor, the new passenger rapid transit system and the high-speed baggage handling system, etc., which are scheduled to be completed in 2024.
In the future, Hong Kong International Airport will make every effort to turn a city airport into an airport city, improve airport transportation facilities, provide diversified travel services, and create a convenient and comfortable travel experience for passengers…..

In addition to the runway re-designation, other preparation work for the targeted commissioning of the Third Runway in 2022 will include exercises, drills, trials and documentation work. Thereafter the Centre Runway will be closed for reconfiguration, conducted in parallel with other works of the 3RS project, with the target of completing the construction of the 3RS in 2024 as planned.

By the 1990’s Kai Tak international Airport became the world’s third busiest international passenger airport … in 1993, Kai Tak handled more than twenty four million passengers outgrowing its original design capacity …. IN response, the Government decide to close the Kai Tak international Airport and build a new one on Lantau Island …….. At two minutes past midnight on the sixth of July 1998, when the final flight took off, a Cathay Pacific Airway flight.. From Kai Tak to London Heathrow Airport, Kai Tak officially accomplished its historic mission … …..

The Construction of the new Airport started in the early 1990’s it was the largest infrastructure project in Hong Kong at that time…. Situated at Chek Lap Kok.. Hong Kong International Airport commenced operation in July 1998, four times the size of Kai Tak… Hong Kong International Airport now houses more than one hundred and twenty airlines connecting Hong Kong to over 220 destinations all over the world , handled more than seventy four million passengers, over five million tonnes of cargo over 420,000 air traffic moments annually …. To cope with growing air traffic demand, The Airport Authority has invested more than thirty billion Hong Kong Dollars over the years to enhance the airport’s facilities, busy air traffic present challenges for the airport … The Current two runway systems will reach saturation soon, and the airport is expanding into a three runway system.  The three runway system will not only strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a major international Aviation hub it will also increase passenger and cargo volume significantly bringing enormous long term economic benefits and create job opportunities for Hong Kong region… More Importantly the Airport’s expansion will ensure that traveling for Hong Kong’s people will be even more user friendly. By 2035 it is expected that Hong Kong International Airport’s passenger volume will increase more than one hundred and twenty million passengers with cargo growing more than towards ten million tonnes …

By expanding into a three runway system, Hong Kong International Airport will be able to cope with future demand and maintain its international and regional competitiveness and continue to support trade and manufacturing, logistics, tourism, finance and banking….. After years of preparations the construction of the three runway system started in August 2016, the project is expected to be completed in eight years.. Expanding towards a three runway system, it’s not about building a new runway …. The entire project involves reclaiming 650 hectares of land, in which is equivalent to thirty four victoria parks …. In which building a new passenger building and parking stands with a new three thousand and eight hundred metre long runway … integrating the system with a new automated people mover system with a new baggage handling system…. Also with the expansion of terminal two.. The project is an undertaking almost like building a new international airport.. 

HKIA is also undergoing a series of developments to reinforces it cargo leadership, a premium logistic centre at Kwo Lo Wan in the South Cargo Precinct of HKIA in which is expected to commence operation in 2023,  with an estimated gross floor area of 380,000 square metres … The centre  will be third largest warehouse in Hong Kong….  another Initiative to meet the huge air traffic demand is the Hong Kong International Aviation Academy, in which will provide training for local and regional young people whom are interested in the aviation industry with a view to building a talent pool for the Airport’s future Development ….
